LIVORNO

The origins’of Livorno are uncertain: probably the zone where the city lies was already inhabited in neolithic times, as evidenced by various finds, but the real birth of the city is relatively recent. After Pisa fell to the Florentines (1405), Livorno passed under Genova which a few years later ceded it to Florence for 100,000 fo­rins. This was the beginning of the city’s prosperity. The population quadrupled and it rapidly became a very important port and the large Porto Mediceo was bulit a fine structure which added luster to the city. The city’s Cathedral was built at the end of the l6th century on a project by Alessandro Pieroni, and was later enlarged in the l8th century. The simple facade is entirely faced with marbie. The Latin-cross interior has a nave only and contains various fine monumental tombs such as the one dedicated to the Marchese Marco Alessandro del Borro and Count Ginori. The Church of the Conception is by Pieroni (1599). The facade is simple and restrained. The single-nave interior contains fine works of art including a bronze Cruciflx, perhaps by Ferdinando Tacca, on the first altar to the right. The Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori is situated in a small palace at the center of the park of Villa Fabbricotti.
